Prove It!

Purpose:
This is a place to record and review groups shot with .22 rimfire
rifles. The need for this service arose from a disagreement between
members of the ShootersTalk
rimfire board concerning claims of small average group size.
Without a visual or official record, it is hard to verify such
claims. If the claims are false, the lack of evidence should be
apparent, but if they are true, perhaps some shooters need to
raise their standards. It is my goal to provide a service that
will provide a reference for everyone. I'm seeking targets that
represent typically good performance from you and your gun, but
"benchrest accuracy" is not a requirement.
Guidelines:
Download
and print the appropriate target (.22lr or .22WMR), being sure
to follow the printing instructions. Take the target to the range
and fire 5 shots at each numbered bull from the distance specified
on the target. Use only one type of ammunition per target. Use
a bench and sandbags, rests, etc. but no vises. Measure
each group yourself and write the measurement above each group.
If you think your effort is a good representation of you and your
gun's abilities, fill out the information blanks on the target
and mail
the target to me (include a SASE if you want the target returned).
I will scan the target and post it here.
Important Notes:
I will only accept targets that were downloaded from this site
and printed to the correct scale. This is to ensure that the shots
were fired since the inception of this service, and to provide
a common format and ensure ease of scanning. Fill out as many
of the information blanks as you can. So that your performance
can be compared to that of others, you must fire 5 and only 5
shots at each bull, and, preferably, use one of the targets specified
for your caliber. If you use a target not for your caliber, or
shoot at a different distance, you can still submit the target,
and I'll put it in the non-standard category. Also note that anything
written on the target above the information block or outside of
the leftmost, rightmost and bottommost shots is likely to be cut
off during scanning.
While this service has some similarities to a postal match, it is not one. There will be no scoring by me, and no awards will be given. The targets are not serially numbered; try as often as you like. Hopefully the number of bulls on each target is sufficient to rule out luck. Besides, practice is good for you.
